Florida Medical Marijuana Qualifying Conditions: Full List
Complete list of qualifying conditions for Florida medical marijuana. Learn if you qualify and how to get your MMJ card.
Florida's medical marijuana program recognizes 11 specific qualifying conditions, plus a catch-all for conditions deemed comparable. Here's the complete list and what you need to know about each.
The 11 Qualifying Conditions
1. Cancer
Patients with any form of cancer qualify. Cannabis can help with chemotherapy side effects, pain, appetite loss, and anxiety related to diagnosis and treatment.
2. Epilepsy
All forms of epilepsy and seizure disorders qualify. CBD-rich products have shown particular promise for seizure management.
3. Glaucoma
This eye condition causes increased pressure that can damage the optic nerve. Cannabis can temporarily reduce intraocular pressure.
4. HIV/AIDS
Patients with HIV or AIDS qualify. Cannabis can help with appetite stimulation, nausea, pain, and wasting syndrome.
5. PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)
Trauma-related anxiety disorders qualify. Veterans, accident survivors, and others with documented PTSD can be approved.
6. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This neurodegenerative condition qualifies for medical cannabis treatment.
7. Crohn's Disease
This inflammatory bowel disease causes severe digestive symptoms. Cannabis may help reduce inflammation and manage pain.
8. Parkinson's Disease
This movement disorder qualifies. Some patients report improvement in tremors and overall symptoms.
9. Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
MS patients often use cannabis for muscle spasticity, pain, and other symptoms. Both THC and CBD may help.
10. Chronic Nonmalignant Pain
This is the most common qualifying condition. Pain lasting beyond the normal healing period (typically 3+ months) that isn't from cancer qualifies.
Examples: Arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, back injuries, migraine
11. Medical Conditions of the Same Kind or Class
Florida law allows physicians to recommend cannabis for conditions "of the same kind or class" as the above. This gives doctors flexibility to approve patients with:
- Severe anxiety disorders
- Depression (in some cases)
- Insomnia
- Autoimmune conditions
- Other chronic or debilitating conditions
The Evaluation Process
To determine if you qualify:
- Find a registered physician — Not all doctors can recommend cannabis
- Bring medical documentation — Records showing your diagnosis help
- Discuss your symptoms — Be honest about what you're experiencing
- Learn about cannabis — Your doctor will explain products and dosing
If you don't have one of the 11 specific conditions, you may still qualify if your doctor determines your condition is comparable.
Getting Your Recommendation
Once a physician determines you qualify:
- They enter you into the state registry
- You receive an email to complete your application
- Pay the $75 state fee
- Receive your card in 2-4 weeks
Conditions That Don't Qualify
Some conditions generally don't qualify on their own:
- Mild anxiety or stress
- Occasional insomnia
- General wellness
- Recreational use
However, if these symptoms are part of a diagnosed condition that affects your daily life, discuss this with your physician.
